The HLL Story

Heavy Lift Learning represents the latest chapter in a lifelong journey I started 30 years ago. Thrilled to have survived high school and not interested in sitting through another four years of "boring" college classes, I struck off on my own by enlisting in the Marines. Over the 20-year-long career that followed, I learned a great deal about myself and others, including arriving at the realizations that learning can be enjoyable and that there's no one "right" way to learn. These revelations reignited my own passion for learning as well as sparking a desire to help educate others.

My family and I moved several times following my retirement from the Marines. In every new place, I found myself in a different job surrounded by great people willing to share their passion for teaching and learning. Over the intervening decade, I worked as a freelance writer, public speaker, licensed teacher, private tutor, staff development professional, and an airport director. Along the way, I managed to earn a pair of graduate degrees - one in History and another in Education - as well as several certifications related to teaching and management.

Despite all life's changes, my passion for education and eagerness to help others remain unwavering. Whether training staff, teaching students, or coaching kids on the field, I love bringing out the best in others. That's why I started Heavy Lift Learning, an instructional design company combining the very best aspects of my military experience with lessons learned as a professional designer and educator.
