Buffalo Soldiers Day 2025

The Buffalo Soldiers were African American troops formed in 1866 after the Civil War, serving in segregated U.S. Army units like the 9th and 10th Cavalry and the 24th and 25th Infantry. They protected settlers, built infrastructure, and fought in the Indian Wars, earning respect for their bravery and discipline. Native Americans reportedly gave them the nickname “Buffalo Soldiers” due to their fierce fighting and hair resembling buffalo fur. They later served in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, and World Wars I and II. Despite facing racism, they had the lowest desertion rates and won numerous Medals of Honor.
